Hello all from SE Michigan

Postby copyman_5 on Wed Jun 04, 2008 4:09 am

Boy what a rush!! I accidentally ran into a djembe group playing at a park in my town last summer and have been hooked ever since. I'm also happy to say that one week out of the four we play, our group gets a schooling from Kofi Ameyaw and sometimes Mark Stone! In total awe of everything about them as musicians. I am a lucky, happy soul indeed.

Peace-
Steven

Hey Steven,

Welcome to the joy and obsession. I wish you a bright rhythmical future both in front of the drum and here on the forums.

If you need anything, just shout :dundun:

Hi! Where in SE Michigan are you? I live up North, and am trying to get a group going up here... Lots of great teachers (and students) in the Ann Arbor area though. You should definitely hook up with Ryan Edwards of Likewater Drum and Dance. He is a great teacher...

Hey Garvin--
I live in Oxford and belong to the Orion Community Drummers. I joined 2 summers ago and drummed only for a short time because of too many personal issues to deal with. I re-joined back in April of this year full steam and have no intentions of letting anything get in my way this time. This time I went and got myself an awesome drum with all the gear.
We are one of few circles around that actually gets training--the others are mostly jam circles--nothing wrong with that but it gets kinda old. So, as I mentioned in my last note, Kofi Ameyaw and sometimes Mark Stone (2 of the 3 performers in the Bernard Woma Trio) give our group of 8-12 supposedly commited drummers a real schoolin'. I've heard of but not seen Likewater and have heard raves about Ryan too. Seen them on YouTube and are impressed.
So where up north are you and how long have you been playin? :dundun:
Peace---Steven

Steven...

I've met Kofi, and actually drummed with him once. There are so many great musicians down there, you are really lucky. There are only a few folks who I've met up here that have had any exposure to this music. I've played and studied for about 8 years in Southwest Colorado, and I try to get down to Ann Arbor once a month or so. I'm also trying to get something started up here, but it has been tough to get it off the ground so far.

I don't know if I find that strange or not that more people don't know or haven't seen drumming of any sort. What types of ways have you tried to gather interest?
