Isaiah Chevrier plays djembe on Oprah - November 17th

November 11th, 2008

American people wil be able to check out Isaiah Chevrier playing djembe on Oprah on November 17th.

I’m not 100% clear, but it sounds like it will only be the video being played, rather than the young guy himself playing…

Good chance there’ll be some discussion on djembe and djembe music surely, so I’d be watching if I could!

Try not to Inhale

October 29th, 2008

This is the first case I’ve head of, but another person is in care in hospital after inhaling Anthrax from the a goat skin while re-heading a drum.

Read all about it on new scientist below:

Anthrax Djembe Skin

We must aggrevate the risk by virtue of the fact that we are shaving the skin with a razor blace and loads of dust and fibre come off during this phase….

I wonder how many people in Africa die mysteriously from this condition every year?

Invitation to Contribute to the Community.

October 8th, 2008

I have added a new page to the site for djembe in burkina faso.

The purpose of these pages for each country is to provide usefull information for eachcountry.

This could include:

  • up and coming events
  • performance groups in the area
  • Teachers and classes in the country / state / area
  • any other relevent info

I would like to invite anybody that is interested in contributing to the site to do so. You can do this in a number of ways.

  • Volunteer to represent your local area. I can add members of the community as contributers to the blog, so that they can write posts relating to their area. This is a good way to establish yourself in djembe community, locally, nationally and internationally.Blog posts for each country appear in the relevent category - example. These categories will soon be tied back into each country’s page.
  • Add details of events and classes in your area
  • Email me details of teachers to list on the national page
  • Write and article on a djembe related topic. This could take the form of a blog posts, a guide or an article to appear in the Articles section.

All articles contributed may have 2 text links to a site of your choice.

Djembefola.com has a google PR of 5. Which is the highest that I know of for a djembe site on the Internet. 1 link from us to your site, with the right anchor text will be enough to put on the first page for many highly targeted djembe type search phrases.

I hope some of you will take me up on this, if you have any questions, please email me on james at djembefola.com

African Drum and Dance Weekend - Dublin Ireland

October 2nd, 2008

Hi Guys, I’m passing this message on from hoolahoop Marion.

Looks like fun!!!

I hope you are free the following weekend the 10th and the 11th of October. As we are lucky to have a master dancer from Guinea West Africa visiting us in Dublin to give a two day workshop in both African drumming and dance. You can choose between a drum and/or a dance workshop. Don’t be shy to try a bit of dance if you are always behind a drum or try some drumming if you are always out dancing.

If you have any further questions just ring me 0857201889

Global Beats 2008, Ipswitch, Suffolk, England

September 25th, 2008

I’m passing on details of this event in the UK, as it seems to be for a good cause:

I am organising an event in November called Global Beats, at Otley College, Suffolk. It is in aid of a charity called Love Light Romania. All profits will go to the sanctuary in Romania which offers a home to children who have the aids virus through childhood immunisation! unbelievable - I know. The link to this charity is www.lovelightromania.com have a look to see what they are up to.

I work at Otley college and the PA to the principle is heavily involved with this project, when I saw the film about the charity, that was it, I knew that we could do something for them and hopefully top what we raised in January (£1000)

The event is looking to be fabulous, with loads of workshops and then supper then topped off with an amazing concert of drumming, samba, balafon, dance and high energy.

The whole event is to be filmed by BBC as part of a European series that will be shown on the TV in early January.

It would be wonderful to fill up all the workshop spaces and sell lots of tickets for the meal and concert.

thank you so much in advance for your help.

Anyone who feels that they can also pass this email on would also be helping enormously.

New Djembe band in Dublin - Wassa Wassa

August 6th, 2008

Wassa Wassa has been born from the ashes of Djembefaso which fell asleep and didn’t wake up last year.

The band is made up of Andy, Aoife, Rob, Nial the 2 Marians and they are a breath of fresh air to the Dublin djembe scene.

Check out the Wassa Wassa myspace page and I really enjoyed their promo vids. Clean, organised and pretty good going for only 3 drummers.

I look forward to seeing more of their performance and wish them luck with the future…
